Lord accept mercy…there are just some meals that are the image of southern comfort food similar hamburger steak and gravy! I grew upwards eating this repast alongside mashed potatoes or rice, sweet peas, dinner rolls, and ice common cold sweet tea.  Information technology'south not the most photogenic dish but ahhh…the proficient ol' days! As a kid, even when I was exterior playing I knew when we were having hamburger steak for dinner.  The smell of those savory onions and beefy gravy always fabricated it'southward mode outdoors. Probably from usa kids running in and out nonstop. It was one of my favorite meals.

It was e'er served with mashed potatoes or rice since those really are the best with dark-brown gravy! Sweet peas just complimented the savoriness so well.

Now I'm not talking about Salisbury steak (which uses egg and often breadcrumbs), which is as well another favorite of mine.

The recipe I'one thousand sharing with yous today is for a state hamburger steak with no bells or whistles. Fifty-fifty though I dear adding new things similar bell peppers and celery and swapping out things occasionally, sometimes yous just want a straight up southern classic. Pure, plain and unproblematic.

Nearly accurate southern recipes are that way. Just easy ingredients brought together to sooth the soul and easily (and cheaply) feed a big family unit.  No fluff or complicated methods. Hamburger steak and gravy is exactly that manner. Just beefiness, broth, spices onions, and flour. Maybe a petty bit of butter and fresh garlic for skillful measure out. And man is it a comforting, hearty meal.


Country Hamburger Steak west/ Onion Gravy

  • 1 lb ground beef fourscore/20 chuck is perfect. I use organic, grass-fed for best taste
  • 1 Tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • i teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • one/iv-1/2 teaspoon salt run across notation
  • 1 small-scale sweet onion diced into thin strips
  • iii Tablespoons butter optional.If you're not using the leftover fat from beef
  • 2 Tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth warm (Use a really savory brand or homemade. I apply beefiness broth paste)

  • Add ground beef, olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, blackness pepper, & salt into a large bowl.

  • Use your hands to combine the spices with the beef.

  • Heat a large stainless steel skillet over medium-loftier rut.

  • Sear the burgers on both sides to create a nice "crust" on the burgers.

  • Remove burgers from skillet and identify on a plate. Ready aside. (The burgers may exist a petty undone and that's ok)

  • Leave 3 Tablespoons of fat in the skillet or add 3 tablespoons of butter if y'all adopt not to apply beef fat.

  • Add together onions and saute until tender and aureate.

  • Serve over mashed potatoes or rice.

  • Garnish with parsley.

* Exist conscientious when adding salt to the beef since the onion gravy is more likely on the salty side depending on which brand you use. I but added a little over a 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the beef.
